Global Anti-Mining Campaigns

We have become aware of two recent global campaigns by NGOs that specifically target the mining/metal sector. We believe it is important for national governments with an interest in mining/metals to be aware of global developments that can affect the sector and their ability to benefit from their mineral resources.

The first is sponsored by Friends of the Earth International. It aims to have all international financial institutions stop funding for oil and mining projects. The timing and objective of this initiative are linked to the Extractive Industries Review. The target is the World Bank and all other financial institutions. The name of the campaign is "hands off; why international financial institutions must stop drilling, piping and digging". It targets the supply side (mining) or early stage of the mining/metal life cycle. See details at http://www.foei.org/publications/pdfs/handsoff.pdf

The other campaign is jointly sponsored by Earthworks and OXFAM America. Earthworks is related the Mineral Policy Centre based in Washington that has been acting for several years as a coordinator for global anti mining campaigns for NGOs. The objective of this campaign is to stop demand for gold, particularly gold jewellery, so that gold mining stops. It targets the demand side or late stage of the gold life cycle. The name of the campaign is "no dirty gold". See details at http://www.nodirtygold.org/home.cfm.

These campaigns are examples of global issues and debates that governments could best address through a global forum.
